I was excited to hear that her Arthur Ashe essay was chosen as a national winner.

"This year's Arthur Ashe Essay contest winners consist of a talented group of students from some of our most outstanding NJTL programs," said Dan Faber, USTA Foundation executive director. "We expanded the focus of our essay question and challenged the students to reflect on the great achievements of Althea Gibson. This year's responses were some of the most phenomenal ones we've read as they truly highlighted their individual experiences and personal strengths as a result of the positive impact tennis has had on their lives. We are proud of their hard work."

Draw and you could win a trip to New York City (open to all contestants age 12 and under participating in an NJTL program): Contestants will compete in one of two age categories listed below. Draw a picture or create artwork of your answer to the question, “If Arthur Ashe were alive today, what do you think would give him hope?" and you could be one of four national winners who win a trip for you and a parent/legal guardian to New York City. Be a VIP at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day presented by Hess, attend a professional sporting event, see a Broadway show and receive a special award at a luncheon held in your honor. Be creative, but artwork must be flat and no larger than 11” x 14”. Artwork must be in English and will not be returned.

To enter the contest, children were asked to write an essay of 350 words or less, or create an art piece, responding to a specific question around Arthur Ashe and his great accomplishments. This year’s question: “If Arthur Ashe were alive today, what do you think would give him hope?” A USTA sub-committee selected the winning essays from the more than 1,100 submitted based on their knowledge of Arthur Ashe, message clarity, and writing style. The winning art pieces, which included over 700 submissions, were also selected based on their knowledge of Arthur Ashe and creativity.
