A simple thesis statement is not quite what it maysound like. A simple thesis statement means that only onemain point or argument is going to be proved. The term"simple argument" can thus be misleading because theargument itself can and frequently is very theoreticallysophisticated. What makes them simple is that in terms oftheir logical structure, they only take on one line of proof, andhence, their organization of proof will be simple. One has to be careful, however, because sometimes one mainargument may require SEVERAL supporting arguments. Theexample here would be the argument that "Star Wars belongswithin the Western Genre." Here the writer has onlyone thing to prove, but in order to do so will have to establishthe elements that comprise the Western Genre and demonstrate howthe film embodies them--not a small task.
Making an Argument
As stated earlier, the academic essay is an exercise in reasonedpersuasion. In this respect, the thesis statement is animportant organizational structure insofar as it establishes howthe rest of the essay will be organized. Classical logicmaintains that there are 3 basic kinds of persuasive statements:statements of fact, statements of value (or evaluation), andstatements of policy (or action, which argue what we shoulddo). A banal thesis statement is a statement that does notreally say anythingit is in fact meaningless because it iseither so overly general or so evident as to not be ofsignificance. 5. Supplementary Information. Occasionally, especially in a longer research paper, you may not be able to include all of the information or ideas from your research in the body of your own paper. In such cases, insert a note offering supplementary information rather than simply providing basic bibliographic information (author, title, place and date of publication, and page numbers). In such footnotes or endnotes, you might provide additional data to bolster your argument, or briefly present an alternative idea that you found in one of your sources, or even list two or three additional articles on some topic that your reader might find of interest. Such notes demonstrate the breadth and depth of your research, and permit you to include germane, but not essential, information or concepts without interrupting the flow of your own paper. Additional claims or analysis of your own that you want to include in your essay without distracting readers from the central line of argument may also appear in footnote form. In these cases, the footnote will include a citation because the ideas or findings presented belong to you.
