If a writing assignment is not effective, what is it? It’s nothing. It did not allow students to gain any meaning from it, and therefore it was not helpful. When we start to design our writing assignments we must consider what the instructional purpose will be. We need to know the goal of the assignment. Without a goal there is no way to measure whether or not the lesson was effective and taught the given material. Throughout the unit, the teacher needs to be doing formative evaluations to make sure that the daily goals are being met. Not only do the assignments have to be effective, but they must align with the English standards of learning as well as the NCTE standards. When both of those standards are met, and you have decided on a purpose, you are on the right track to an effective writing assignment.
First, avoid using language that is simplistically judgmental. Don't say that something is great or beautiful or exciting or interesting. Your readers are apt to become defensive: "We'll be the judge of that," they'll say. Your job as the writer of this essay is to how the work under consideration is beautiful or exciting. If you do that well, your readers will be convinced of the work's beauty without your saying that it's beautiful. An occasional, off-handed "beautiful" or "exciting" is all right; just don't expect your readers to be convinced unless you make them that beauty or excitement.
