He began writing poems at high school while he learned Greek and Latin
He then received his BA in 1915 and his MA in 1916 both from Harvard University

E. E. Cummings was a combination of an unabashed Romantic in his view of life andan avant-garde modernist seeking to explore unusual means of expression. His poetrydeveloped from boyhood imitations of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to the linguisticsurprises he brought to the literary scene in the 1920s. He continued to write sonnets allhis life, often traditional in theme--a tribute to love, an address to the moon, thepraise of a church, a prayer of thanks for the ability to respond to life--but sometimeshe chose "unpoetic" subjects--a nightclub dancer, the gurgle of water going downa sink, brothels and their customers, a denunciation of salesmen, a politician giving ahypocritical patriotic speech, a mélange of play with advertising slogans.

This essay takes its title from a 1959 essay by Robert Langbaum called "The New Nature Poetry." Langbaum's essay was a pioneering foray into the vast and complex topic of modernist nature poetry: as such, it provides uswith a convenient and logical starting point for an investigation into Cummings'nature poetry. Langbaum's essay makes two large claims: first, that in contrastto the Romantics' religious veneration of nature as teacher, guide, and nurse,the nature poetry of modernists like Wallace Stevens, Marianne Moore, RobertFrost, and D. H. Lawrence stressed "the mindlessness of nature, its nonhumanotherness" (102). To that end, modernist poets avoided projecting "humanfeelings into natural objects" (104). In other words, they avoided what criticscall the pathetic fallacy.
