Whilst I totally see the logic behind this idea, there may be a slim chance that the opposite of the desired effect will be achieved. For example, many of my friends buy and have been buying seemingly ‘cheeky’ packets of ten cigarettes to smoke at occasional parties and pub visits. This ritualistic and extremely common process has been going on for years and, due to being far less frequent than drinking itself, becomes just another monthly treat. There may be people that would argue that smoking, even in this kind of moderation, is still extremely addictive and will in time be something that these people need, rather than want. However, due to partaking in this extremely rare and merely social taboo, I can indeed confirm (without promoting smoking, as it is extremely bad for you in the long run) that smoking a packet of ten cigarettes every few weeks whilst out drinking does not mean that you wake up in the morning and immediately race to the corner shop for your next fix. Many things are bad for us. Drinking is extremely bad for us, and causes far more devastation and injuries than the occasional social cig. Clearly, all illnesses are far more likely to hurtle themselves your way if you smoke, but drinking is no health benefit. The risk of heart disease and the chances of having a stroke both double if you’re a drinker or a smoker.
