My generation’s desperation to attain their degree means that they will pay rapidly rising tuition, even at state schools which were created so that all could afford a college education. When colleges raise their selectivity and standards (often code for raising their tuition), they become the means to chain those who are told they need them. Students sign on for decades of debt for a degree that many couldn’t care less about.

In my own experience, I find that college today has become a business, and a highly profitable one at that. Beginning in high school, the average student pays to take the standardized tests required by admissions, if not classes and books to prepare. Then come the onslaught of application fees, entrance fees and tuition, which even at state schools continues to rise higher and higher. And finally, there is the price of books, which in and of itself smacks of racketeering. As a student, I was relieved when my textbooks were only $300 per quarter, and lucky when I was able to sell them back for a quarter of their original worth. Imagine my surprise when I went to the bookstore and was told that my books had no value. How could a book have no value?

I was told that college would be the greatest experience of my life. I would be free to choose my own path and I would find out exactly who I was. But on campus, it didn’t seem as though the student body was working too hard on discovering itself. Those who wanted to continue to graduate school were far too focused on their grades and contacts to do much else. The rest of my peers seemed to be only working towards that piece of paper, and usually for their parents, or simply because they knew that nowadays, it is an absolute necessity.
