These "why" questions help us realize our highest aspirations and our truest interests. To answer these questions well, we must decide what matters most to us, what we will be able to contribute to in our careers, what are the right (as opposed to the wrong) ways of behaving as we aim toward this end, and, ultimately, what kind of persons we want to become. Because everyone, everywhere, wants to live an admirable life, a life of consequence, the "why" questions cannot be ignored for long without great peril to one’s personal stability and enduring success. It is like ignoring the rudder on a ship—no matter how much you look after all the boat’s other moving parts, you may end up lost at sea."
Here, you must showcase both the research that you have put into your MBA path, and the research that you have done on Stern’s program. The question focuses mostly on the short-term, so keep your answers specific, concrete and achievable. Build a progression, beginning with the skills you have now, the skills that you hope the MBA will give you, and how you will use the degree after graduation. Then, you should have a bit of room to explain how your immediate post-graduation plans fit into your long-term goals.
Why an MBA at all? (Why not another kind of Masters, or a PhD?)
Start with your direct goal on graduation. Adcoms want to see a goal that is both believable and ambitious. If your goal is simply to continue what you are doing now, that is too realistic. It is a waste of an MBA. If your goal, however, is to do something radically different from what you are doing now, and there is not a clear sense of how you are going to get there, that is too ambitious. Many of my clients use MBA to change careers. Others want to lead their current industry.
